Open Front-end developer position

Hello,

It appears that this group is on hiatus, but in case anyone's listening, we're hiring a front-end developer here in Sacramento who's hip with the standards. Here's the posting:

RE: Legacy Browser Testing -- IE not loading changes

Thanks Mark.

No, I meant to include that this is a basic, static HTML site. Just a little one pager that wouldnt require any of that. I suppose there's a chance that the ISPs apache settings are what's causing this, although its not happening on other sites hosted I have hosted by them.

Will look into the string versioning option also.

Good stuff, thank you.

Thanks Bill, will call you tomorrow late morning.

Just to clarify, not really needing troubleshooting with the pages themselves, since theyre more or less working across the board now (or as well as can be expected), but more with how to get IE to recognize the most current set of styles its been given.

Appreciate it!

RE: Legacy Browser Testing -- IE not loading changes

If your using any server side scripting, make sure you are not caching the files in the application scope. Deleting the css file from the server and and still seeing the styles means that something is being cached.

There is also a mod_cache rule in apache. Normally it's off by default but perhaps it's on in your case.

Rather than changing the css file name you can append a query string to it as a version number. e.g. style.css?v=1

Aaron, would you mind posting the URL? Or maybe you want to send it to me privately. I have IE6 , IE7, IE8 and IE9 running in separate virtual machines. Maybe we could work though some troubleshooting on the phone. I teach tonight, but will be around most the weekend.

Legacy Browser Testing -- IE not loading changes

Not sure if this is the best forum for a question like this, but hopefully someone on here can at least point me in the right direction.

I recently moved from a less-than-reliable browser emulator to a partitioned XP and a Win7 box to be able to run IE 6, 7, 8, 9 on separate systems (requires a reboot between versions). These machines are only used for testing and previewing IECC changes.

This process is tedious enough, but I've now run into the issue of a
"non-refresh" in IE7 and 8 (6 untested). IE9 will only reload if I leave the page and return, but 7 and 8 only recognize whatever version I first served to the browser. Modern browsers (non-IE) on these machines and my Mac are behaving as they should.

I've followed all the standard in-app options (via Security, Safety, Privacy tabs for clearing the cache etc.) and have cache disabled in F12 Dev Tools. Force clearing the cache doesnt appear to have any effect, neither does deleting the CSS file from the server altogether.

(So: IE is writing it somewhere thats not the cache? I'm not a PC guy and wouldnt know where to start with all the bizarre files Win writes to... but this doesnt seem like something that would require any command-line work or file spelunking to make happen.)

The same issue is coming up in Adobe Browserlab's versions of IE7-9 (tested via Safari on my Mac), which tells me this may not have anything to do with my specific installs of IE or the systems theyre on.

One recommendation I got was that the ISP may be caching the files, but that would mean:
-- the modern browsers would be having the same problem, and they're not. (also rules out the htaccess expirys, yes?)
-- I should be having similar problems with other sites on that same host, and I'm not.

The only solution I've been able to find is to manually update the CSS filename before each refresh, which is about a mile-and-a-half east of "So Totally Not Okay." Once I do re-link the CSS in the head and re-upload both files, everything behaves as it should (IECC is written correctly, file address is correct, FTP complete, etc).

I'm out of ideas. Any clue as to what might be causing this and how to avoid it? Really appreciate any ideas you might have! Thank you!

Change of Power

As many of you know, my wife and I are expecting a baby this January. Having a brand new baby is going to require a lot of support from me in my fatherly duties especially immediately following his birth. For this reason, I have to take a back seat in the group for a little while. I would like to ask someone in the group to step up and take control of the group for a little while. Contrary to popular belief, moderating the group is not a difficult task, and you don't have to know everything there is to know about the web. I will still be around to answer questions, help plan topics, and with any luck, attend the meetings. I just don't want to see the group die out.

If your willing to take over as group moderator, please chime in below or send me an email.

RE: Local Startup Now Hiring

I just got off the phone with one of the principals of this startup. They are still looking for a PHP/MySQL developer to help with this project. He tells me they are also open to working with someone on a contract basis if you prefer that over full-time employment. Contact bmullin at dugaduga.com if you are interested.

Also, he wants to come to one of our meetings to socialize with Sacramento developers. I told him I'd let him know a good meeting to attend. I'll look for one with a good attendance of PHP developers.

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to drop you all a line. I was hoping to make it to the meeting tonight as I have not been to one in a little while(not that I was all that regular to begin with) but I don't have a ride home other than Amtrak so I have to catch the 5pm train. Anyways just thought I would let you all know I have gotten a job with Trion Worlds in Redwood City, CA and will probably not be making it to any more meeting now that I will be living down there.

I wanted to let say that I really enjoyed the meetings I was able to make it and loved learning and sharing with you all.

Joshua
